Live Carving of a Hae Hawaii

This month I did an IG LIVE carving of a Hawaiian flag stamp. I wanted to make something that felt meaningful for this time of year when so many American flags are being waved. Celebrating the 4th of July was routine for me as a child, but as an adult - it’s become a painful holiday for me. Being of part European and American descent I can understand why it is a big deal for America, but as a part Hawaiian it has no meaning and in many ways it is very offensive to celebrate it here.

This month we’re talking a lot about La Hoihoi Ea (click here for the story) so that gave me another reason to carve a hae Hawaii.

The carving itself is pretty simple since the design is so geometric. Carving can be dangerous so little children shouldn’t carve, but once it's made anyone can use it! Grab some screen printing ink or an archival stamp pad and let your keiki stamp it onto fabric or clothing for a fun family activity. I also found a drawing tutorial handout I made that you can do as a family as well.

Full disclosure — I was pretty low energy during that reel, so it's not the most exciting watch, but it gets the job done. I'd love for you to join me for a future Friday Live carving session so we can do it together in real time.
