Do You Think This Will Happen Before I Reach Kupuna Status?

This week I didn’t do great with studying Hawaiian which happens sometimes!! I did have a nice conversation with a fellow learner which is always a good way to stay accountable. We talked about the word “kala” (silver) and how not all Hawaiian speaking communities use it. This got me thinking about how the Hawaiian Language really struggles in unity. From UH Hilo to UH Manoa to immersion to at-home to the Niihau community to high schools - there really are not many speakers and ways to learn.

I really wish all the different linguists, native speakers, and organizations could sit down and come to some agreements about how to incorporate all the Hawaiian Language knowledge we have available into homes and classrooms.

Maybe this will happen before I reach Kupuna status. Hoping for it!
