Learning About Olena from Tuti Kanahele

How many ways do you know how to use olena?

Olena (also known as turmeric) is a Polynesian introduced plant that is used in cooking, dyes, and laau. Our good friend and kumu, Tuti Kanahele was showing us last week how to prep olena root for use. First she dug up the root and shot it down with water on screens to clean it off before letting it dry in the sun. Then we collected the olena on trays and sat down with small knives and peelers to get the skin off of it. After this step you can process it into a number of laau (medicines) or other things. Tuti uses it in her laau for general sicknesses as it helps to control inflammation.

If you’re interested in learning more about laau or getting some olena products then join me and Tuti in our first ever market together May 9th and 10th at Magic Island. More info to come!
