Mahina Olelo Hawaii Shouldn't Be Once A Year

Last week was the pule hope (last week) of Mahina Olelo Hawaii (Hawaiian Language Month). Did you set any goals and work towards them? Any successes you want to share with us? We always love cheering you on no matter how big or small. Just remember that Mahina Olelo Hawaii shouldn’t be once a year so if there was something that you found helpful that you did - see if you can keep doing it! As for our ohana - we’ve been helping our daughter prepare for a speech competition. Competing was all her idea. She loves challenges and competitions and stages! My kane found an article that had part of a speech Queen Liliuokalani gave to her people after Hawaii was illegally annexed in 1898. Here’s the article for you to read:
-
See if you can pick out any of the words or phrases starting with “Ke Haawi aku nei…” and ending with “ma mua o keia.” (The second paragraph)
-
Come back and read the translation: “I give my gratitude to you, the people, for your unceasing steadfastness and loyalty to our nation. Just as I have heard of your loyalty and patience [while abroad], I too have remained loyal and endured until the end. And today you see that end. Don't suppose that I sat idle and failed to act. But, let us have patience and hope for a time when we will get what we deserve, even for something greater than this.”
How does it feel to read her words in Hawaiian?
